## In short

Many facilities use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to bridge the first moments of an electricity failure, then a diesel generator for longer outages. A battery energy storage system (BESS) adds a third option: stored electricity that supports backup and also cuts everyday energy costs. While the grid is up, a battery can trim peak demand, store surplus solar output or shift purchases to cheaper hours. That last use is growing in value in India, where time-of-day tariffs now apply to commercial and industrial consumers with a maximum demand of 10 kW or more, with lower rates in solar hours and higher rates at peak (Indian Infrastructure). During an outage, the same battery can supply selected critical loads. These roles must be planned together: electricity discharged for savings is no longer there for backup (National Laboratory of the Rockies).

That last use is growing in value in India, where time-of-day tariffs now apply to commercial and industrial consumers with a maximum demand of 10 kW or more, with lower rates in solar hours and higher rates at peak ([Indian Infrastructure](https://indianinfrastructure.com/2023/06/21/mop-notifies-electricity-rights-of-consumers-amendment-rules-2023/)). During an outage, the same battery can supply selected critical loads. These roles must be planned together: electricity discharged for savings is no longer there for backup ([National Laboratory of the Rockies](https://www.nlr.gov/reopt/curriculum/what-is-reopt)).

Replacing diesel is easiest where outages are short, critical loads are well understood and the battery can recharge reliably. Longer outages may still need a generator or another dependable source.

Replacing a UPS is a different test. A fast-responding battery does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted electricity. Transfer behaviour, power quality, inverter capability, protection and redundancy must all meet the equipment's needs. Even UPS products differ: a double-conversion online UPS has no transfer time, while a line-interactive unit switches in a few milliseconds ([Schneider Electric](https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FAQ000268416/)).

As a worked example, a constant 500 kW critical load needs 1 MWh of delivered electricity to run for two hours. The installed battery must be larger to allow for conversion losses, usable-capacity limits, auxiliary consumption and ageing. It also needs enough electricity to handle the load and any motor-starting surges. Our article on [sizing a BESS with ergOS](https://joulewise.com/insights/size-your-bess-with-ergos) walks through these numbers in more detail.

Safety belongs in the design from day one: battery chemistry, fire detection and suppression, ventilation and spacing all affect where and how a system can be installed.

The practical goal is a coordinated backup system. Batteries handle the outages they suit and manage energy every day, while any retained UPS or generator covers what the battery cannot.

The right design starts with two questions: how long an interruption can your operations tolerate, and how long an outage must they survive?
